Hydrostatic Transmission FAQs

FAQs

So, we’re always talking about eHydro™ transmission, John Deere’s hydrostatic transmissions. You’ll find them in a lot of compact tractor models, but you may not know what that means and would like to know more of their benefits. Below, we’re digging into the basics of hydrostatic transmissions, and answering some of your burning questions.

What Is a Hydrostatic Transmission?

Hydrostatic transmissions use hydraulic fluid to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. This allows for precise speed and direction controls–without clutching or shifting–making it ideal for jobs requiring fine adjustments and regular changes in speed.

What Are the Advantages of eHydro™?

  • Twin Touch™ pedals for easy forward and reverse operation
  • No clutch or shifting
  • Seamless, variable speed control
  • Hydraulic motors act as a brake, making for quick and easy stopping
  • More compact than other transmissions

How Does John Deere Use Hydrostatic Transmission?

John Deere’s eHydro™ hydrostatic transmission can be used to your benefit in many ways. Here are some of our favorite examples:

  • John Deere Lawn Tractors utilize hydrostatic transmission to make for a smooth operating experience, allowing you to focus on your lawn instead of your equipment.
  • The flexibility of eHydro™ transmission allows our compact tractors to operate quickly and easily on any task, no matter the implements or attachments necessary.
  • With compact construction equipment, precision and control are absolute necessities to ensure efficiency and safety on the job site. Hydrostatic transmission allows operators to apply torque smoothly, making handling heavy materials no trouble at all.

How to Maintain Hydrostatic Transmissions?

Fluid Levels

Hydraulic fluid is the bread and butter of a hydrostatic transmission system. Regularly check and maintain all fluid levels to ensure safe and smooth operation.

Filter Changes

Refer to your operator’s manual for specifics on changing and maintaining filters.

Frequent Inspection

As always, frequent visual inspections are crucial to help determine any necessary maintenance. We also suggest seasonal professional inspections on all equipment to help extend the life of your equipment.

Are There Any Downsides to Hydrostatic Transmission?

Well, with all the advantages we’ve discussed above, we think the gains far outweigh the losses. Still, here are some of the costs of hydrostatic transmissions:

  • Hydrostatic transmissions are generally less powerful than manual transmissions, making steep hill climbs and extreme heavy-lifting jobs slightly less efficient.
  • Hydraulic fluids can be susceptible to contaminants, making maintenance more specialized and, in some cases, more expensive.
  • While they operate with high torque at low speeds, they may output lower power at higher speeds.
