Why choose a John Deere compact tractor?

John Deere has long been trusted in the ag and turf industry. Their compact tractors are built to the same standard we’ve come to expect from them, offering durability, comfort, and industry-leading technology. The extensive dealer network–that’s where we come in!–means you’ll never have to travel too far to find expert advice, parts, or services.

What size compact tractor do I need for my property?

This is one of the first questions buyers will ask. The answer depends on the size of your property and the demand of your tasks. For most properties under 20 acres, a 20-50 horsepower engine can get the job done. The larger the property or the heavier the lifting, you’ll need to shop at the higher end of the horsepower scale. Here’s a quick guide:

1 Series – Up to 5 Acres

2 Series – 5 to 10 Acres

3 Series – 10 to 20 Acres

4 Series – 20 to 40 Acres

5 Series – 40+ Acres and Heavier-Duty Projects

Is a compact tractor easy to operate?

Absolutely. John Deere compact tractors are designed to be easy to operate, even for beginners. Features like hydrostatic transmission, easy-to-read controls, and Twin Touch pedals make for a simple and intuitive operating experience. With quick-attach systems for many implements and attachments, you’re able to simply switch tools and get right to work.

What kind of attachments do I need?

Some of the most popular and versatile options include:

  • Front loader bucket for hauling material
  • Backhoes for digging and landscaping
  • Mowers or rotary cutters for lawn care or bushhogging
  • Post hole diggers
  • Snow blowers or blades

Quick Tip: When browsing attachments, customers often confuse loaders and buckets. The term loader refers to the entire hydraulic lifting mechanism mounted to the tractor. Bucket refers to the popular loader attachment designed to scoop and haul materials.

Should I buy a new or used tractor?

While new tractors feature the latest technology, warranties, etc., purchasing used can be a great way to save money on top-tier equipment. When you shop at United Ag & Turf, you can trust that our used equipment is inspected with the same rigor as our new machines.

What maintenance is required?

Routine maintenance is the trick to keeping your tractor running strong for years to come. This includes checking fluids, changing filters, greasing moving parts, and more. Check out our guide to routine maintenance or schedule service now.

What is the difference between a compact tractor and a utility tractor?

To make it simple, compact tractors are smaller than utility tractors. While they can’t lift or pull as much as a utility tractor, compact tractors come with many advantages. They’re more maneuverable, affordable, and versatile enough to take on a wide variety of lawn care tasks, landscaping, small farming, and more. With over a hundred compatible attachments, your John Deere compact tractor is ready for almost any task you throw at it.

If the John Deere 1-4 Series can’t quite pull the weight you need, check out the 5 Series. With 50+ horsepower, this series is made up of John Deere’s smallest utility tractors, capable of taking on some heavier-duty chores around the property while still requiring less storage space than standard large ag equipment.

Can I finance my tractor?

Yes! While we’re often running low-APR promotions, you can learn about all of your financing options at the link below.

Can I use a compact tractor for farming?

Absolutely. While a compact tractor isn’t ideal for large farming operations, it can be a game changer on smaller-scale or hobby farms. With the right attachments, your compact tractor can be a mower, a tiller, a seeder, and more!

Are compact tractors good for homesteading?

Compact tractors are great for the wide range of tasks that can come your way while homesteading. From hauling firewood and clearing brush to digging post holes and leveling driveways, your compact tractor will be the backbone of your homestead. With their compact size, they’re ideal for tight, wooded spaces and require less storage than a utility tractor.

How to perform DIY maintenance on my John Deere?

John Deere compact tractors are designed with maintenance and accessibility in mind. With easily removable panels, regular service reminders, and a user-friendly design, home maintenance is a manageable option for DIYers. If you’re less comfortable with at-home maintenance, your local United Ag & Turf crew will be happy to help!

What should I look for in my first tractor?

For new buyers, it’s important to consider these basics:

  • Horsepower: double-check that your tractor’s horsepower and PTO power can handle all of the tasks you’ll be working on.
  • 4WD: essential if your land is hilly or muddy.
  • Comfort and visibility: spend some time in the seat to make sure you’ll be comfortable working from it!

Quick Tip: PTO (power take-off) runs your attachments.

Do I need special storage for my compact tractor?

While you don’t need a full-sized barn to store a compact tractor, it’s still ideal that you have a way to keep your machine out of the weather and elements. A shed, carport, or garage is sufficient to protect it from rain, snow, and unnecessary sun exposure. If you don’t have covered storage available, consider a heavyweight tarp or cover.

Can a compact tractor be used for snow removal?

Yes. In fact, you’ll have a hard time believing you ever cleared snow without it! Depending on your snow clearance needs, you can choose from snow blowers, brooms, blades, and more. For rougher snow clearance jobs, many operators simply use their loader bucket.

What does TBL mean?

TBL stands for tractor, bucket, loader. This is a quick reference to a tractor’s included implements and attachments. For instance, if you see “John Deere 1025R TBL,” you know that the unit includes a loader and bucket packaged together. No tractor is complete without a loader!
