Power Take-Off (PTO) Explained

Tips & Advice

When checking out tractor specs, you’re always seeing us talk about power take-off or PTO. The larger the tractor, the higher the PTO. So, what does that mean, and why does it matter? In short, higher PTO opens your options to operating more implements and attachments and running them more efficiently. Below, we’ll break down different kinds of PTO and provide some guidelines to help decide what size tractor you need.

How Does PTO Work?

How It Functions: PTO takes power from your tractor’s engine and transfers it to various types of equipment, allowing you to operate a backhoe or spin the auger while digging post holes. Thanks to PTO, all of your attachments don’t need their own engine!

How to Use It: Engaging your tractor’s PTO is a quick, user-friendly process. In older models, you’ll find a manual lever that will connect the PTO shaft to the engine, giving power to the implement. Most newer models feature electro-hydraulic engagement, which allows engages the PTO with the simple flip of a switch.

Different Types of PTO in John Deere Tractors

Transmission PTO: While transmission PTO is rare these days, it’s not unheard of, and may be found on some older or more basic models. Here, the PTO shaft is directly connected to the tractor’s transmission, meaning that your PTO can only operate when the tractor is in forward motion.

Independent PTO: This is much more common in tractors today, and with good reason–they’re activated by the flip of a switch. Here, the clutchless PTO runs independently of the tractor’s transmission and can be engaged and disengaged regardless of the tractor’s movement. This is a more popular option, as it allows your attachments to reach full operating speed before movement.

PTO Safety

Like all heavy equipment, a PTO’s rotating shaft can be dangerous if not treated with care. Regardless of protective shields and shutdown features, it’s important to keep loose hair and clothing away from the shaft and to never step over an active PTO system.

PTO Maintenance

A little maintenance and care can go a long way in maintaining the longevity of your machine. You should be regularly checking and lubricating the PTO shaft, and following all guidelines in your operator’s manual. Additionally, always double-check that guards and safety shields are securely fastened in place.

Choosing the Right PTO

Deciding which PTO is best for you is just a question of what you’re working on. All implements and attachments are rated with a horsepower requirement. Your tractor’s PTO horsepower–not just its gross horsepower–should either match or exceed your implement’s requirement.
