Battery Protection

Our Blog

During the winter season, we are often reminded of the importance of protecting our equipment batteries. However, it is important to note that the summer season can also negatively impact batteries.

Hot temperatures can accelerate chemical reactions within the battery, shortening its lifespan. Additionally, the growth of crystals (sulfation) within the battery’s electrodes speeds up, making it harder to recharge. Internal corrosion and evaporation of electrolytes in lead-acid batteries are also amplified by higher temperatures, leading to weaker batteries and premature failure. While these issues may go unnoticed during the warmer months, they can surface during colder weather and cause problems.

Fortunately, there are steps we can take to minimize the wear on our equipment batteries during the summer season:

  1. Charge the battery properly before summer use.
  2. Keep the equipment out of direct sunlight and find shade or cover when not in use.
  3. Regularly check the battery for clean connections, tight holding hardware, and correct fluid levels.
  4. Avoid letting equipment sit for extended periods without use.
  5. Ensure that parasitic load items such as electronics are working properly to reduce battery drain.
  6. Shut off unnecessary systems before leaving the equipment to reduce parasitic load and slow discharge.
  7. Consider using AGM batteries where applicable as they are less likely to be affected by loads and sulfation. An additional benefit is that they can sit unused for a longer period.

By taking these precautions, we can reduce the likelihood of battery issues. If you have any questions or need guidance on battery protection, reach out to your local United Ag & Turf or United Construction & Forestry service department today.
