Always Operate Outdoors

The primary rule for generator safety is exclusive outdoor operation. Due to the emission of carbon monoxide, running a generator indoors or in poorly ventilated areas can cause severe health concerns. Avoid the accumulation of toxic gas by operating exclusively outdoors, away from any doors or windows.

Utilize a Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Install a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in your home or workplace when using a generator. These will signal early signs of CO accumulation. This step is crucial.

Avoid Wet, Damp and Rainy Conditions

Prevent electrical hazards, fires and potential shocks by refraining from generator use in wet, damp or rainy conditions. Place your generator on a dry, level, elevated surface and shield it from potential rain or moisture.

Keep Away From Flammable Materials

Position your generator safely distanced from any flammable materials such as dry leaves and grass. Maintain a distance of several feet to mitigate the risk of fire.

Use Proper Outdoor-Rated Cords and Ensure Grounding

An outdoor-rated extension cord is built to withstand the elements of the outdoors. This will significantly reduce the risk of electrical faults or hazards. Additionally, ensure that your generator is properly grounded to avoid electrical shocks.

Install a Transfer Switch for Home Wiring

If you’re connecting your generator directly to home wiring, be sure to install a transfer switch. This will prevent back-feeding electricity into the grid and ultimately prevent damage to your generator and appliances.
